Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) from Reifen Diehl
What is the difference between a wheel change and a tyre remounting?
A wheel change involves swapping complete wheels – summer and winter tyres are each mounted on their own set of rims. This is faster, more straightforward, and cheaper for seasonal changes. The downside: a second set of rims is required. With tyre remounting, summer and winter tyres are mounted onto the same set of rims – no second set of rims needed, but the effort and cost are higher each time.
What is the difference between summer, winter, and all-season tyres?
Summer tyres are designed for temperatures above 7°C and offer the best grip and shorter braking distances on wet and dry roads. Winter tyres have a softer rubber compound that remains flexible in cold, snow, and ice conditions, providing better traction – in Germany, winter tyres are legally required in conditions involving snow, ice, or slippery roads. All-season tyres carry the Alpine symbol and are approved for year-round use, but represent a compromise: they wear out faster in summer, and in heavy snow and ice they offer less grip than specialised winter tyres. They are particularly suitable for drivers with low annual mileage, in regions with mild winters, or for predominantly urban use.
What tyre size fits my vehicle?
The currently fitted tyre size is printed directly on the tyre and listed in your vehicle registration document under item 15. Our staff will be happy to advise you on the right choice.
Are alloy wheels suitable for winter?
Yes – alloy wheels with ECE or ABE approval are generally suitable for winter use.
Do I need TPMS sensors?
For vehicles first registered in the EU from November 2014 onwards, a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) is required by law. At every tyre change, we check whether the sensors are functioning correctly. We also programme and pair them.
What happens with incorrect tyre pressure?
Incorrect tyre pressure increases braking distance, impairs driving stability, increases fuel consumption, and leads to greater tyre wear.
Tyre pressure too low – what should I do?
A mobile pressure station is available at our petrol station.
When do I need balancing?
When the steering wheel vibrates, the vehicle shakes at higher speeds, or after every tyre change or mounting. Balancing involves attaching small counterweights to the rim so the wheel runs evenly again – this improves handling and reduces wear on tyres and suspension.
When does a wheel alignment make sense?
When the vehicle pulls to the left or right, the steering wheel has play or sits crooked while driving straight, after heavy kerb or pothole impact, or in cases of uneven tyre wear. A wheel alignment is also recommended after suspension work.
What is checked during tyre storage?
During professional storage, tread depth, tyre age, condition of the rims, and any visible damage or uneven wear are inspected. The wheels are stored dry, cool, and protected from light to preserve the material and keep the tyres in good condition for longer.
Why is a wheel wash useful?
During use, brake dust, salt, tar, and road dirt accumulate on the wheels. Brake dust contains metal particles that can gradually attack the rim surface. A thorough wheel wash protects the rims from corrosion, allows for a better damage inspection, and ensures clean, gentle storage.
Why should I have my tyres changed by a professional?
A professional tyre change ensures the wheels are tightened to the correct torque, tyres and rims are inspected for damage, tread depth is checked, wheels are balanced, tyre pressure is set precisely, and the TPMS is checked. This improves safety, extends tyre life, and saves time and effort.
What is the minimum legal tread depth?
The legal minimum is 1.6 mm. At least 3 mm is recommended for summer tyres and at least 4 mm for winter tyres.
What is checked during a service?
During a regular service, the braking system, lighting, fluid levels, filters, and wear parts are inspected. Regular maintenance improves safety, prevents major damage, and helps maintain the vehicle's long-term value.
When is the MOT/vehicle inspection carried out at your premises?
On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
My bulb is broken – do I need an appointment?
No, we replace bulbs without an appointment – just drop in.
How long does an appointment take?
Full wheel change approx. 30 minutes, tyre remounting approx. 45–60 minutes, wheel alignment approx. 60 minutes, oil change approx. 30 minutes.
Do you offer an air conditioning service?

Is ice cream available to buy?
Yes.
Is there a waiting area?
Yes, a waiting area for customers at the tyre sales counter is available.
